Rodney Connell and Brandon Duhon formed Night Drive in 2013 here in Austin. The duo will be preforming at Float Fest alongside artists such as Rooney, Rick Ross, Santigold and Chromeo on July 16 and 17.
The guys actually met after a young woman they were both unknowingly dating was killed in a car crash. Initially romantic rivals, the two actually were bonded by the tragic event. Shortly afterwards the musical collaboration known as Night Drive was born.
Brandon said that their first track “No Plans” was created “when we got together in the studio to decide if our collaboration worked. That song was literally the first day we got together and we were like, ‘Let’s see if this comes together.”
And it certainly did. Inspired by Sci-Fi cinematic landscapes, Night Drive creates self proclaimed “modern synth-pop that explores the darker currents of abstract emotion.” They are, essentially, the future of electric pop. Their goal? A totally immersive experience for their audiences. Rodney brings a post-pop feel to their sound whereas Duhon brings in an electric dance element. The duo manages to balance catchy melodies with heartfelt lyricism in a way that is both infectious and pulsing. Their beats are definitely energetic, stylish even, so it’s no surprise that their music has been featured in film, tv and radio around the world.
Evoking thoughts of darkness’ imposing and enveloping qualities, Night Drive lives up to their name by beckoning us an adventurous road trip through their poetic lyricism and their overall aesthetics.
So get amped for these guys, they’re all about keeping the crowd engaged–expect some crowd surfing! I’d recommend buying your ticket for Float Fest soon, the tickets are going fast.
