The best Friday promotional stunt of SXSW found itself in the form of a fake funeral procession led by hometown brass kings Interrobang Brass.
Adorned with red bandanas and black shirts, the full 8-piece band marched down Sixth Street piping four songs that they had learned by ear just hours before their performance, followed by a casket with information on Young Thug’s new album release date. Around them, a crowd of smartphones immediately appeared, capturing digital seconds of the half-hour gig.
Louk Cox, the saxophone extraordinaire of the band, said this about Interrobang’s spontaneous involvement: “Some of the members of the group are really into Young Thug so it was a huge honor for us to be chosen for this stunt.”
According to the band, Young Thug’s press team reached out via e-mail the same day of the actual stunt with no indication of why the band was chosen for the performance. “It was a very spontaneous gig that kept us guessing from start to finish,” said Cox.
Young Thug’s mixtape, titled Slime Season 3, comes out next Friday.
